Grand Strand SCORE offers Community Workshops that are FREE and held across the region to aide in dealing with the current business climate. Subjects include "How to REALLY Start Your Own Business" and "How to Survive a Recession." Contact the SCORE office for scheduling.
Grand Strand SCORE, in conjunction with the Georgetown Chamber of Commercce and the Georgetown County Board of Education, conducts business education for middle school students the first week of summer break. The program, named "Junior Apprentice", teaches business planning, market research, and teamwork. At the end of the week, teams present their conceptual comapnies to a local CEO who critiques their work and chooses a winner. Contact the SCORE office if you want more information or if you think your school system would benefit from a course taught by experienced business people.
The following workshops are offered in conjunction with Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC). Schedules change, so please check the Continuing Education Catalog at the HGTC website for more information about the courses or contact the SCORE office.
Business Series

If you are well along the way and have a good idea about your business idea or are already in business, the “QuickSTART” workshops will give you extensive detailed guidance to develop a meaningful business plan and a good, workable project plan aimed at a successful startup or an improved operation. Save 50% by signing up for all six courses: Start Up Basics, Business & Marketing Concepts, Market Planning, Project Plan, Financial Plan & Business Plan. QuickSTARTTM Workshop

A quick walk through of the necessary tasks required to start your own business. The concepts of focusing your business idea, planning the business, organizing the resources, directing the action, and controlling the tasks will be explored. Handouts included. 3 hrs. WEEK 2: BUSINESS & MARKETING CONCEPTS

Counselors will assist you directly in the development of your business idea. Market planning activities will include determining your ideal customer, matching them to your product differentiators, pursuing and conversion of business leads, developing your core marketing message, and matching your message and your image. Prerequisite – Week I. QuickSTARTTM Workshop or permission of the instructor. Handouts included. 3 hrs. Part of the Business Series, but $30 as a stand alone.
WEEK 3: MARKET PLANNING

Students will present their business customer descriptions, core marketing message, differentiators, and product summaries. Market planning will continue with review of media methods to find prospects and convert to customers. Advertising concepts, suggestions for pricing, and developing a marketing budget will be covered. Prerequisite – Week I. QuickSTARTTM Workshop or permission of the instructor. WEEK 4: PROJECT PLAN

Students will present their pricing, sales estimates, and market budgets. Use of basic project management tools will be shown. Results will be a focused management plan for the successful startup of your new business. Topics include setting up project tasks, timing the use of resources, and achieving best startup performance. Guest presentations of topics selected by students. Prerequisite – Week I. WEEK 5: FINANCIAL PLAN

Students will present their startup timing and funding needs. The Instructor will show how to develop the critical financial information for use in the Business Plan. Topics will include the necessary information to obtain funding and to use as a guide in the startup and operation of your new business. Emphasis will be on budgets, cash flows, startup costs, financing requirements and timing. Ensuring your new enterprise’s profitability is the key objective. Additional guest topics from student selections. Prerequisite – Week I. QuickSTARTTM Workshop or permission of the instructor. Handouts included. 3 hrs. WEEK 6: BUSINESS PLANS

Students will give brief presentation of their Business Plan. Develop a complete, concise, and completely usable Business Plan, the key milestone for every small business. Use of the information from the earlier workshops along with Business Planning Software will be demonstrated. Software will be available for use by the students in follow-up individual counseling.
